More unknown history revealed

June 14, 2010, 2:42 am

After the B-ville 200 MPH Club party and Antique Nationals last weekend it was back to the scanner and copy some things from our past  that hardly anyone has seen or knows about these days. It didn't take long to find a couple of items that are really rare so lets get to them.

First up (JMC_1245) was a free-bee if you happened to visit "Hollywood" Bill White's Ascot Cocktail Lounge on Slauson Avenue in Los Angeles. How many matchbooks from his joint still around is anybodies guess but I bet there aren't many. Bill entered cars at Indy from '27 (he won that year) straight through to '47 with some of the best shoes in the business behind the wheel. After WWII he promoted Midget races at the L.A. Coliseum so you could say he was a real player.

From Dan Warner's dad, Harry comes more old goodies. DWC_063 shows what is left of a Chevrolet Brothers product brochure page circa '21 showing one of their most famous products, a Fronty DOHC head for the Model T engine. The hop up boys started early making Ford engines preform extraordinary feats. In the same group of old stuff we find this next clipping (DWC_061) from a June 1939 L.A. paper that gives a rundown of driver placeings in the Fifth Annual ARA (American Racing Association) race at Oakland Speedway. Looks like Harry was already buddies with Wayne Horning way before they became partners in the Chevy head business. Recognize any other famous names?

Friday morning we received a package in the mail with a few hundred pictures on CD from Bill LaPolla. They consist of Drag racing shots from Santa Maria and San Louis Obispo tracks and boy are they cool. But first off we have to give credit to our pal Richard Parks for hooking us up with Bill. Thanks!

Two shots that stood out from a quick review are LAP_001 showing the Joe Carboni/Juggers Racing Team Devin bodied sports car hoofing it off the starting line without much wheel spin. These same boys showed up at B-ville and were really haulin when a tire let go kinda messing up the body. Looks like a lot of research needs to be done on the drag boys to get these shots IDed correctally. The next shot (LAO_002) shows a '28? getting ready to stage. Bill had noted the car was run by Skip Higginbotham who I happened to see at the 200 MPH club party last weekend and e-mailed Thursday. Looks like some more jawing is in order to get the story on his car. All I can say is what a small world.

This weekend was the second S.C.T.A. event of the year so it was play in the dirt again time. I had received a call from Royce McClintick saying he wanted to meet up with me at the lakes for a talk, so between impound cars and inspections we hooked up. Seems we takled for quite awhile and then went over to his ride and he pulled out a couple of old albums full of great pictures to look at. Man were they cool. Seems he was hooked up with the Summers Brothers back in the day with their Goldenrod and the stories were endless. As luck always comes into play Bill Summers shows up and the stories got even better, especially the ones that can't be told to protect the not so innocent. To cut to the chase he lent us the shots to share with you so here are two to wet your appetite. Again after they're scanned and captioned they will get posted for your viewing pleasure.

His first teaser pix (RCE_001) shows his radically chopped and channeled Willys coupe. He said it was never finished, what a shame. The next one (RCE_002) shows the Goldenrod when it was on tour in Europe with a great story behind it. Seems he and Bill were chugging down the Autobahn at quite a clip when Bill yelled stop. Ye old trailer hitch ball receiver decided to part company with the rest of the trailer on the narrow road that had a nasty drop-off on each side. Luckily all went right and the racer survived the ordeal. This pix shows the Rod in a neighborhood welding shop with the owner's kid enjoying his trike. What a shot and whatt a story and yes there more like this to come.

Since there's only room for one more shot this week lets make it a special one. The AHRF helps out our friends doing special project and Jim Lattin is one of them. The project this time was the recreation of another prewar classic to park next to his Hilborn car in the guise of the Danny Sakai Modified. Shots from our collection somehow always reveal some detail that is long forgotten that make for a perfect finished product. It also helps that our Mr. Doty was there when the car was originally constructed over 70 years ago to fill in gaps with his amazing memory banks. The just completed car was at the lakes for a R&C Magazine shoot and will be at the Fathers Day show next weekend. Be there.

Also of note on the vintage repop scene will be the debut of AHRFer Phil Remington's lakes modified at the Wally Parks NHRA Museum this coming weekend. See you there.
