Ed Winfield is unquestionably one of the most important figures in the history of hot rodding and racing. An early pioneer in precision carburation, Winfield’s meticulousness found its way into every aspect of development has to do with a racing car. His famous “two up-two down” Model T Ford four-cylinder engine ( a development that Winfield chased because of a lack of equal fuel charges across all cylinders of a stock Model T engine ) found him designing his own crankshaft as well as changing the firing order so that a huge gain in performance could be made. His deep, scientific understanding of the internal combustion engine set him apart from many of his competitors and allowed him to not only make huge advancements in fuel delivery ( with his Winfield carburetors ) but also develop high-performance cylinder heads and camshaft profiles for competition use that were second to none.
